January; a new year; the time for resolution and the opportunity to discard old vices. This year I’m determined to kick the habit. I’m getting too old. My body, in the hammy words of Star Trek’s Scotty, ‘cannae take it anymore’. I’m not talking about tobacco, or alcohol. I’m talking about something far more seductive; a mind-blowing trip into a psychedelic fantasy land. I’m referring to ‘Carnaval’ – Tenerife style.

Following on from Jack's post about a Navidad Blanco or White Christmas in Tenerife this may not be so strange as it sounds as this week has seen the first covering of snow on Teide for this winter. Teide is often snow capped throughout the winter months and from time to time the roads are even blocked or closed because of snow.

The idea of spending Christmas in warm sunshine attracts thousands of visitors to Tenerife for the festive season every year, but for me it’s the traditions and the atmosphere in Puerto de la Cruz and similar Canarian towns which make the festive season a special time.

Back in 1797, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was but a humble dependency of the old Tenerife Islands Capital La Laguna but all that was about to change in July that year as Rear Admiral of the Blue (the 9th highest rank in the British Royal Navy), Horatio Nelson was set to attack the Spanish port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in his search of Gold.

Nelson loses both the battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and his right arm
