La Caleta - A beautiful Tenerife fishing village
(Tuesday, 15 January 2008) Written by hopper

On a previous trip to Tenerife my wife and I looked out onto our balcony and saw that the skies above our Tenerife holiday apartment were threatening rain so we decided to have a little trip up the coast to Adeje and visit La Caleta and see just what this small fishing village had to offer, we were glad we did as La Caleta really is a gem of a Tenerife fishing village.

La Caleta a beautiful Tenerife fishing village

Situated just a few miles along the cost from Playa de las Americas, the small fishing village of La Caleta has in more recent years seen a boom in Hotel developments (such as the Sheraton La Caleta & the Costa Adeje Palace) and upmarket private developments however the beautiful harbour and heart of the fishing village has been relatively untouched.

After a brief visit to the area around the Hotel complexes we headed of to the harbour and the real La Caleta. Here we wondered along the sea front passing the many quality fish restaurants where the local catches are prepared, cooked and served for you in traditional Canarian style.

La Gomera seen from La Caleta, TenerifeWe decided to stop and have a bite to eat, after all it was lunchtime and it would have been rude not to indulge ourselves. So after looking at the many different menu’s we finally decided to eat at the Piscis restaurant. As the name suggests, this restaurant specialises in Seafood but it also has an extensive non-seafood menu that is very good.

I don’t know about you but when I am holiday I can easily lose an hour or two just sat out at a restaurant on the seafront watching the world go by and the tide drifting slowly in and out  as I drink coffee and eat a meal.. Sitting on the balcony of the restaurant overlooking the sea was a fantastic accompaniment to our scrumptious food and from our vantage point we could also see La Gomera, Tenerife’s nearest neighbouring Canary Island and it was here over lunch that we promised ourselves we would take a trip over to the Island via the fastcat ferry and a stay at the la Gomera Parador the next time we were back in Tenerife for a holiday.

The sea front at La Caleta, TenerifeLa Caleta is also very good if you like to swim in the sea as there are sturdy (although rusty) ladders that have been sunk into the rocks inorder for you to be able to get out of the sea easily, however be warned, not only is the sea quite deep here in the bay but it can also get quite rough from time to time and as with all times when you swim in the sea, caution should be exercised.

On your next Tenerife holiday why not take time out to visit La Caleta to swim in the sea and dine in one of its fantastic fish restaurants?
