Tenerife to Lanzarote, land of fire - without getting your fingers burnt!

Tenerife to Lanzarote, land of fire - without getting your fingers burnt!

That little devil gets everywhere in Lanzarote, not surprisingly really as he is the symbol of the fire and brimstone that still smoulders in the belly of the island. Go to Timanfaya National Park, that will keep you on your toes, the soil at the visitors centre is still warm to the touch, a bush dipped into a shallow crater will burst into flame and water poured down a bore hole will squirt back out as a sizzling, steaming geyser.

Lanzarote could be the last place you think to go for a short break from Tenerife as it is the most easterly island, but take to the air, and less than an hours flight will see you in Arrecife airport from as little as 35 euros return. Just buckle in with Binter Airlines ( www.bintercanarias.es ) or Islas Airways ( www.islasnet.com ) .

As for somewhere to stay, less than half an hour from the airport, in the sedate resort of Costa Teguise you will find Sands Beach Resort hotel (www.sandsbeach.eu)  set on the beachfront with 6 pool centred plazas and a sea water lagoon with it's own private beach. Ideally placed on a headland near the golf course, Sands Beach Resort has looked on bemused as some of it's neighbours have been caught up in a game of political monopoly over building licences.

With your own base secured, you can set out to explore the devils kingdom and enjoy the spoils. From Playa Blanca at the southern tip to Puerto del Carmen, the nightlife centre and Arrecife the capital and former fortress where invaders were repelled, beaches rub shoulders with rocky coves. Inland the eerie lava landscape is a reminder of the 6 year eruption from 1730 that coated the island. Windmills have crumbled but wind sculptures have taken up their theme, part of the legacy of Cesar Manrique, the architect, sculptor and father of the modern Lanzarote.

When you are ready to return to Tenerife, the check in is speedy and painless and the intimate 70 seater planes fly low giving great views into the cones of an army of volcanoes.
