Las Galletas, Tenerife, Safe surfing in sunny Tenerife: Whenever I see surfers on the TV, I think – wow that looks like great fun but it also looks a little dangerous. For a start they all look so far out to sea, it looks so deep and I often think about what lurks below – ever since Jaws that is.
Well, if you go down to Las Galletas in Arona, Tenerife you will see many young surfers having fun. They enter the water from the safety of the beach and paddle their way out towards the edge of the harbour wall, here the swell starts to rise and waves develop yet it is still shallow enough for some to be able to stand up.
They often catch a wave and can surf all the way back to the beach. I have to say that this area looks very safe for surfers and in fact you will often see junior Tenerife surfers on body boards doing the same thing. As for what lies below, as a keen Scuba Diver in Tenerife, I can honestly say you are very safe! There are no great whites hidden in the surf here, thinking you’re a seal and taking a chunk out of your board. In fact the most danger you are in from below is standing on a sharp pebble as you try and get out of the water later!
We have spent many a happy hour sat at one of the many café’s along the front at Las Galletas watching the surfers and body boarders. Go and have a look, you will be surprised at how good these guys are and how the surf gets up in such a small, safe area.
