Tenerife is renowned for the diversity of its landscape, from the fertile North of the Island to the dry arid South. This difference in climate not only produces a marked contrast within the natural flora and fauna of the Island but it is also responsible for the fact that on an island so small, they have entirely different wine regions or DO’s (Denomination de Origen).
These five fully independant regions are:
Abona Ycoden Valle de Güimar Tacoronte-Acentejo Valle de la Orotava
Infact, Tenerife has 5 out of a totoal of 10 DO’s to be found in the Canary Islands.
The marked contrasts found in the climate around Tenerife is responsible for the variations in the Grape Varieties that can be cultivated and ultimately the different wines produced.
On your next trip to Tenerife, why not travel around the island and sample the local wines, you will be pleasantly surprised but don’t forget the designated driver! |
