Q: Please can you advise the best way to access the Internet from apartment in Callao Salvaje, Tenerife. We have just bought a property there. I imagine dialup will be the best option for occasional use during the year but would opt for broadband if it isn't too expensive. Excellent site, thank you. Roger Harvey

A: First, thank you for your comments, it’s always nice to get some good feedback from our visitors and members of Tenerife Times.
Re your internet problem, there are a number of options available in
Tenerife, including dial-up, broadband and even a mobile phone connection.

Probably the best (dependant on cost) would be to access the internet via broadband. This is available (although not exclusively)from Telefonica in Tenerife.

Fortunately Telefonica provide a full English site dedicated to their broadband offerings at http://www.telefonicainenglish.com/. As you can see, the prices are very similar to those charged in the UK, the real crux is how much will you use it and for how long. Obviously broadband offers you the ability to use such extensions as , (click the logo for more information) thus saving on your telephone calls to other Skype users, so the cost of your calls etc have to be factored into this when you make a decision.

For dial-up, there is a neat service offered by http://www.gonuts4free.com/finall/home.php where they provide ISP connections FREE OF CHARGE, using a local call number, however obviously you need a telephone line.

There are other ways for limited use without a landline, these would include using your inclusive minutes from your own mobile phone (I kid you not!) on the GoNuts4free local number. Simply plug your mobile into your PC/LAPTOP via usb, infrared or Bluetooth and your mobile will act as a modem.

Just a few ideas for you to ‘kick-around,’ personally I would always look at the broadband solution first – the waiting for dial-up to load for me is the clincher!!!

We would like to visit Tenerife soon, but I need access to the internet to attend my online university course, submit course work, etc. Are there internet cafes in Tenerife. If possible i need to be live for chat once a week, but the time is 8pm CST (in the United States) so about 12 or 1am in Tenerife. Do you know the cost and well I be able to upload my papers to send via email.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Sue,

Not sure if I can help you here, I'm no expert on mobile phones! However, does she have a mobile package that will allow her to use the phone abroad? I have a tariff that charge me a fixed connection price and then I can use my inclusive minutes availabe on my tariff.

Alternatively, I would have thought that she wold have been better using a Spanish mobile to 'phone home' over a UK one, in theory (as far as I am aware) she will get charged twice using a UK mobile from Tenerife.

Hope this helps or amybe someone else can offer you more info.

Cheers

Michael

Hi, wonder if you can help. Our daughter is staying in our apartment in Los Cristianos for 5 weeks with her 2 young childen. As they go to bed early she would love to call us but she spent £10 on calls yesterday from her mobile! We have a spanish mobile there, would it be cheaper for her to get a card and use that? Also would we still be charged to call her? Her present supplier is T-Mobile, we are not sure who our spanish supplier is.
thanks in advance
Sue

I have an apartment in Callao Salvaje which I use for around 3 months a year. I have dial up and use Gonuts4free. Its a bit slow but works out very cheap over a year. Can't quite understand the comment about not being able to have Direct Telecom in Callao Salvaje as I know 2 people in our complex who have it.

Hello Roger, I run Witzend, an Internet Cafe/DVD Rental/ IT Support shop in Callao Salvaje which you could always use, but to answer your question. There are several dial up options, Telefonica (for which I can supply the dial up connections settings) or as previously mentioned gonuts4free. However in Callao Salvaje if you want ADSL broadband you are limited to Telefonica as it is classed as a 'rural' area dut to a shortage of connections here, so competitors such as Direct Telecom are not allowed to provide competition. The cost is €100 connection fee (which is occasionally waived on special offers) & €39.98 per month for a 1-3mb download connection speed with 320kb upload. The connectivity time is usually around 2 weeks but can take longer depending on the availability of lines. Also unless you purchase the 'lite' option you get unlimited download. Hope this helps.

Telefonica are offering a max 3MB connection and minimum 12 month contract - I didn´t even bother to check their prices, and also assume they have a bandwidth limit. Are there no alternatives? - any other carriers offering telephone services under the Euro unbundling laws? Competitive ISP offers? I say no! to Telefonica - although I do use the Be 24 Mbit service in the uk, which they have recently acquired. (You can get unlimited 8 mbit services in the UK for under 15 pounds monthly with no minimum contract (Eu 22.50).
