When you mention Rum people automatically think of the Caribbean and in particular Jamaica but did you know that the original sugar cane used on the plantations of the distilleries in Latin America came from the Canary Islands and Tenerife?
The influence of sugar on Tenerife can be found in much of the islands cooking and dining with the locals proudly displaying their sweet tooth, nowhere is this more evident than than in the local drink Ron Miel or Honey Rum. You will see this in almost every bar on the island and it is responsible for more than the occasional hangover. The sweetness of the drink makes it very easy to overindulge particularly with the local Tenerife measures! Next time your in Tenerife, give it a try! |
