If you walk around any village or town in Tenerife you will come across children and teenagers playing in local Play areas. These Tenerife play areas host many games from football to general chasing around and skipping however as with the rest of Europe, Tenerife has over the last few years seen an increase in the numbers of youths playing Basketball.

This increase in popularity of basketball both in Tenerife and Spain owes much to the Spanish Professional  Basketball League which is considered by many to be second only to the American NBA leagues.

There are two main Spanish Basketball leagues both made up of 18 teams, they are the ACB (Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto) and the LEB (Liga Espanola de Baloncesto). The ACB is the top Spanish league but it has very close links with the LEB and every year the top 2 placed teams in the LEB move up into the ACB to be replaced in the LEB by the bottom two teams from the ACB.

It is the LEB league that the Tenerife (Baloncesto) Rurals play. Founded in 1996, the team are based in a 5000 capacity sports hall the Pabellón Santiago Martín in La Laguna. Tickets for the league games can be purchased by Telephone (922 824 010 / 922 614 042) or on game days at the stadium itself. Ticket prices range from 5 euros up to 30 euros.

Why not indulge yourself in a game the next time your out in Tenerife?
