Tenerife is on fire (31/07/07)

According to a BBC report, 4200 people have had to be evacuated from their home in Tenerife because of Forest fires. Gran Canaria is also ablaze. It is understood that the fires could have been started intentionally by local Forest Ranger who was disappointed at his job coming to an end.

The fires are being fought from the Air with helicopters, a Water Bombing plane and lorries loaded with water.

It would now appear that the Forest Ranger who admitted to starting the fires was based on Gran Canaria and the authorities have very little idea as to who started the fires on Tenerife.

The major infected areas include:

Garachico, Icod de Los Vinos, El Tanque and Santiago del Teide.

High winds, hot and dry conditions are making fire fighting opperations difficult.

The folowing YouTube video demonstrates just how severe the fires are:

Very sad to read and see what is happening above Garachico etc.We lived in Los Silos for nearly 16 years before returning to live in Weston S Mare in 2004.We have seen small fires in the past but nothing compared to the present fires and sincerely hope that the authorities are able to control the fires before too much damage is done to the lovely parks above Garachico.

Terrible!!

I'm just a regular (holliday) visitor of the island, and I love it. I'ts nature is very beautifull on all parts of the island and very nice people.
If someone is responsible for this action they should hang him on the highest tree. My sympathy to all the people trying to fight the fire and the ones who lost friends or family or their homes.
