It would appear that the forest fires in Tenerife are now under control.

As of 4am this morning (Thursday 2nd August 2007), the President of the Islands Council, Ricardo Melchior, has downgraded the state of alert relating to the Tenerife Forest fires to a ‘pre-alert’ situation.

The fires extended to a perimeter of 78.2km with a little over 15,500 hectares of the forest area destroyed by the blaze. The effected municipalities were:

Los Realejos (1)
San Juan de la Rambla (2)
La Guancha (3)
Icod de Los Vinos (4)
Garachico (5)
El Tanque (6)
Los Silos (7)
Buenavista del Norte (8)
Santiago del Teide (9)
Guía de Isora (10)

At its height, the Tenerife Fires were battled from the air by 12 helicopters & 3 seaplanes as well as fire engines, fire trucks, all terrain vehicles and ambulances from the land. Over 1000 people worked throughout the 48 hours to bring the destruction to an end.

Whilst the fires are considered to be under control, the Fire service and other agencies are staying in the areas to ‘damp down’ and make sure that they do not start again. Ricardo Melchior has asked for everyone’s co-operation in this matter and requested that unless absolutely necessary, people do not enter the fire damaged areas.
