If you have ever been to El Medano whilst you have been on holiday here in Tenerife, you will no doubt have seen the Hotel Medano. This Hotel has for some time been under threat from the Spanish Coastal Department who alleged that the hotel contravened Spanish planning laws and should be demolished because part of the Hotel was built into the sea and therefore breaches the coast line.
This threat is very real but the local council of Granadilla are trying to save the hotel by petitioning the island government in a bid to award the Hotel BIC status. BIC (Bien de Interes Cultural) means that the hotel is seen as being a Monument of Cultural Interest, very similar to a listed building in the UK.
The Granadilla town council say that the hotel represents a symbol of tourism in the area and has a history that can detail the development of Tourism over the years. From it’s original Tomato packing plant start the Hotel has developed into its present day form of one of the major landmarks within El Medano.

Here’s hoping the bid is successful and you can then enjoy the hotels facilities including the sun deck that stretches out over the sea at El Medano for years to come on your Tenerife holidays.
