Q: I wonder if Tenerife Times can help me.  My wife and I joined a holiday company (a Tenerife Time share business) and have been very unsatisfied with the service given and we cannot get the money they owe us. We have been approached by a company  (name supplied but removed by Tenerife Times) who say that they have been commissioned by the Tenerife Tourist Board to get our money back or at least the majority they owe us. This company has asked for a payment upfront and request that we attend a few days on the island to meet a representative who would help us.  Are they for real or is this just another holiday scam?

I hope you can help

Steve Bird

A: Hi Steve, sorry to hear about your problems with the Tenerife based holiday company. I have contacted the Tenerife Tourist Board to see if they could shed some light on this matter, below is an extract from the email reply I got.

Regarding this company, I have had other similar enquiries. It would be very useful if you could publish something on your website stating that this company is not affiliated to the Tenerife Tourist Board and does not undertake any transactions on their behalf. We never get involved in these issues - it would be best for them to contact a lawyer. Thanks.

The most interesting part of this email is the Tenerife Tourist Boards direct quote saying they NEVER get involved in these issues and NOBODY has been instructed to undertake any transactions on their behalf.

SO BE WARNED, NO COMPANY has been instructed by the Tenerife Tourist Board in relation to any holiday club, timeshare or otherwise because as they say themselves, they never get involved in these issues.

We have almost became victims of the same scam by the companies in Tenerife: Being contacted by TV Travel representative, we were told that we would get a refund of the timeshare investment from 6 years ago. We had a free accommodation by them for a week and then someone called David Lyle (an American, married to a Russian) came to take us to the office. Another comapnies came into the game: like Leisure Marketing, TV Travel and RCI - and some guy came out acting as a lawyer that said that we have to buy points from RCI (for £7500) and thne in 3 years time we will get £10.000 back - no way I could do that (I'd rather put those money on a savings account and have that amount inm 3 years anyway!!!) We have not reported them to the Spanish authorities when we should have. If someone get a chance to do that, please do not hesitate to contact the police as these people are 'Actors for Real'! And be careful, do not fall for anything no matter what, especially if they are asking you to give them money.

Hi.
I have been contacted today by tv travel who told me that they were aware of my dispute with full circle holidays. They asked me to travel to Tenerife where my money would be returned. This is despite having been sold the full circle package in Majorca!
They offered me a week in a 4 star complex while the paperwork was processed. When the nice (english) lady asked me when I was available to travel I declined the offer. I have been told that I will receive a 'disclaimer' certificate in the post, stating that I do not wish to claim my refund!!! I have to sign and return it. (LOL)
Not bloody likely, I've been hit for 5 grand already.

hi Having read the above we must advise that the up front amount has risen to £169.00. plus flights on top. We were scammed the same back in 1998 by Club Class on Lanzarotti (?Spelling sorry) We learnt a very valuable lesson after that. If anyone from the islands make contact and tell you it is daylight outside.....CHECK. We await another phone call within the next few days so we can slate them once again. It is the only satisfaction we can get as repayment is not in the offing. By the way the phone number given was 0034 922736300 and the given name was Suzanne from TV Travel. Am I bitter and twisted over this affair? you bet I am, although I am more angry at myself for getting duped in the first place. When are the Spanish authorities going to get hold of these people and get rid of them. It is slowly destroying their holiday resorts, as people will stop coming back.

We bought into a holiday club with Leisure Link in Fueterventura about 5 years ago. They never refunded our money, but we have now been approached by a company calling themselves TV Travel stating that they are working with the authorities to refund our money. Needless to say we have to pay money up front. The company is based at: Apartado De Correos No28 Costa Del Silencio, Las Galletas, Tenerife. how can we check if this is just another con or not?

We have a timeshare in Tenerife and have contacted the company & asked if we could sell it back to them. We received an email saying that they do not buy back any timeshares so could you advice me of any companies that could sell the timeshare for us but with no money up front.

Hi Steve

Any company asking for monies up front is running a scam. Your best bet is to make a denuncia against the company.

Hi Steve
Sorry to hear about your predicament. However, do not use the company that has contacted you. There have been scams where a company sells a holiday club, the client then finds out that it is not exactly what they thought they had bought. Then they get contacted by a company that is helping people to get their money back. However, they need money up front usually on a promise that they will get this back. They do n't , as these con artists are part of the same firm that sold the product in the first place. They just disappear. You may have to write it off to experience.
