On 30th July 2002 during his visit to Guatamala Pope John Paul II canonized a former shepherd from Tenerife. Hermano Pedro became Guatemala’s and Southern America’s first saint.
At the homily read by John Paul II in Guatemala City, on July 30, 2002, Hermano Pedro was called the "first Guatemalan and Tenerifean saint.
Santo Hermano Pedro de San Jose de Betancourt or Brother Pedro was born in Vilaflor in March 1626. He was a shepherd who for lived in a cave near the town of El Medano. Brother Pedro’s cave can be found on the outskirts of the Tenerife South Airport as you travel along the road from El Medano to Los Abrogos.
On our recent visit to Tenerife we were lucky to have visited the site, I will post details and photos of this visit soon. |
