The Tenerife Cabildo will carry out 2,000 telephone surveys in homes around the island during May and June this year with a view to getting a deeper insight in to the mobility habits of local residents. The surveys will be undertaken as part of the Plan Territorial Especial de Ordenación del Transporte de Tenerife (PTEOTT), the Tenerife Transport Plan, which has been on the drawing board since 1st April. The PTEOTT is a regulatory document laid out under the Island’s Territorial Order Plan, Plan Insular de Ordenación de Tenerife (PIOT), and it develops the model to be used to regulate the transport sector in line with the island’s territorial plan. The main objectives of the PTEOTT are planning of land based transport systems on the island of Tenerife, outlining routes, future itineraries, location, continuity and integration of the different means of transport available and setting up the strategies for the consolidation of an integrated public transport system. The first phase in the creation of the Plan is extremely important because it involves compiling the data which will form the basis used to quantify and characterise the type of trips which are currently being taken (territorial and urban organisation, current and planned infrastructure, publics transport services, socioeconomic aspects) with a view to evaluating any alternative transport options that would be the most suitable for the island and the population at large.
Home telephone surveys on mobility To be able to characterise the different ways of travelling, surveys by telephone will be conducted in homes around the entire island throughout May and in the first half of June.
The surveys consist of asking family members (aged over 6 years) about their travelling habits the day before. It is vitally important that the general public takes part in the surveys, which only last 20 minutes. This will provide an accurate insight into the routes followed by Tenerife residents on a typical working day and it will determine the parameters and socioeconomic aspects affecting mobility such as the number of trips made per person per, the starting points and destinations, use of the different means of transport and the reasons for travelling.
Methodology The following methodology will be applied: an initial phone call will be made to identify the pollster, they will explain what the campaign is about and the information they require. Then an appointment for a second call will be made to allow the person being surveyed time to gather together all the information needed about the family’s mobility habits. During the follow up call the information will be compiled.
Prizes to encourage participation Several activities will be used to encourage people to take part. Posters will be put up in the different forms of public transport with info about the survey and its characteristics. There will be a draw for a weekend for two people in a 4* hotel on Tenerife, 5 easy to carry folding bicycles for use on public transport plus 50 bono-vía season tickets for rides on public transport.
A telephone number for the campaign will soon be announced.
