Ok, a little history; I first visited Tenerife in 2004, my family and I were looking for a holiday home as an investment and had looked at Spain, Mallorca and other areas of Europe. Ok, a little history; I first visited Tenerife in 2004, my family and I were looking for a holiday home as an investment and had looked at Spain, Mallorca and other areas of Europe.

After 2 seperate weeks of what seemed like the second Ice age in Mallorca we (the family) decided that winter sun had to be a priority and via the internet looked at the possibility of purchasing a property in Tenerife.

Tenerife had always been seen as 'out of our price range' due to the fact that it had an all year round season although we had never looked into this theory.

The late Autumn and early winter weather in Mallorca forced us to look at countries we had not considered previously. A few days of surfing the many estate agents advertising on the internet dispelled this price myth and we were happy to see that we would infact have some change from our euro's as well as a holiday home we could use all year round.

So it was that in December 2004 I found myself (with my Brother in Law) on a weekend trip to look at a property my Father had seen earlier. We both like what we saw and that was when the inital seeds of our love affair with Tenerife were sown.

Hi Sally that is our dilemma we are some years off retirement, but have an apartment on Golf Del Sur, which go to for our hols and rent out. My wife fell in love with island some years ago. As we both have good jobs, do we sell up and try and scratch a living, or keep saving and building up a good pension pot to fall back on in case we do not get enough work?

We have yet to come across an expat who regretted moving out. Does anybody have any advice?

Hi Michael,

Welcome to Tenerife Times and good luck with the job hunting. - I don't know of any English based construction companies working on the island (but that's not to say they don't exist!) however there is a cement works just outside of Costa del Silencio that is part of the Hanson Group I believe.

You are probably better off asking around when you get there.

Cheers

Michael

Yeah, Sally - it's a hard one, do you upsticks and go now in the hope you can get work for the next 10 - 15 years or do you stay in the UK and work your ticket until retirement and then go out to Tenerife and retire there.

Understand completely what you mean about the love affair. We visited to Tenerife for the first time last September - and wished we didn't have to leave. Went out there again in March and have booked for September too. If only we were twenty years younger, we would take the risk and sell up in UK and move to Paradise.
