As it was my wife’s 40th birthday we pushed the boat out a bit on this visit and hired a convertible car instead of our usual ‘bog standard’ affair and wow were we glad of it once we had left the TF1 and were heading for Los Gigantes.
It was a typical Tenerife day, beautifully sunny but a little hazy in places however we could see La Gomera as we travelled all the way down the main coast road towards Los Gigantes. At the roundabout just outside the town we headed up into the mountains on our journey towards Garachico.

This drive was nothing short of spectacular. As we had the car top down we not only benefited from the sun and warmth and the views but we were also treated to the scent of the countryside. The smell of the pines was something that I will remember for a long time to come. Truly beautiful, it was like driving through a bowl of pot puri.

As we rounded the top of the mountain and turned the corner to head down the other side, it was just as if someone had turned the air con on. The change in temperature as our car snaked its way around the top of the mountain was startling, a marked contrast that was evident even though we had only travelled a mere 100metres – remarkable. The clouds seemed to roll in from the hillside and the as the cold bit at us, the hood came up the windscreen wipers went on. We had heard about the difference in the sides of the island but never thought it could be such a marked a difference.

I was beginning to wonder if I had made the right decision in choosing the San Roque Hotel in Garachico. (Rest assured I had)

We eventually rolled down the hill and into Garachico – that’s a simple description, the roads were narrow and snaked backwards and forwards. It was a stunning drive, scary in parts but exciting and exhilarating and the views are so spectacular that you just have to do it!

As we drove through the town we saw the signs for our hotel – The San Roque, but more of that later!!

Micheal we hired a convertible when we first went to the island. I agree the driving is a lot more enjoyable and more fun. I only wish we could take our Z3 over.
