My wife and I are currently enjoying a stunning holiday in sunny Tenerife however, unlike our other holidays in Tenerife, this one is in August and WOW, what a difference we are seeing.

Tenerife has always been a busy holiday destination for Brit’s as well as the Spanish but in recent years, it has seen a decline in the numbers visiting the island, just why is down to a number of reasons, not least the continued struggle of Sterling against the Euro and the economic uncertainty hitting both the UK and Spain.
From its (commercial rate) low of €1.06/£ in 2009 and therefore parity or less (with commission) in the exchange shops, Sterling has steadily increased to the dizzy heights of over €1.20 to the £ and this is reflecting in the visitor numbers coming to Tenerife.
A local English Language newspaper (The fortnightly Tenerife News) had BRITS ARE BACK as its lead headline this week, stating that the tourism to the Island is up by 12% for July and August and that hotel occupancy is reported at 75% - the best figures since the beginning of the ‘credit crunch’.
Whilst these figures do not indicate that Tenerife is back to its busiest, they do show that the trend is encouraging and with the weather being so bleak in the UK, maybe Tenerife will benefit from an upsurge in last minute bookings once the children have gone back to school.
Let’s hope this is the case because, here in Tenerife where we really have had to struggle to spot a cloud in the sky and had almost constant 30⁰C daytime temperatures, with weather like this, it’s easy to see just what Tenerife has going for it!
