The six members of the all Ladies 'Row for Freedom' team have passed Tenerife and are now completing their final sea trails and preparations in San Sebastian before they head out on the 3000 mile Atlantic crossing from La Gomera to Barbados. If successful the ladies will have broken two world records, they will be the first all female team to complete an unsupported Trans-Atlantic rowing crossing and also the fastest.
For 40 days and 40 nights, the ladies of the Row for Freedom trans-atlantic rowing team will battle with the elements in a bid to become the first unsupported Ladies team to row the 3000 miles from La Gomera to Barbados in a bid to try and raise £1M for ECPAT UK, a charity which spearheads the attempt to end Child Prostitution and Slavery. As part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, the girls will be forced to row 24/7 in a 2 hours on, 2 hours off formation. They will be hoping for a good weather window in which to attempt the crossing as conditions on the boat are rather cramped! With barely enough space for 3 people in the watertight cabin, things might get rough if a storm hits them! Some of the team have volunteered to be lashed to the deck should the weather cut up rough. The team consists of: • Julia Immonen, 31: Row For Freedom Team leader. London. • Andrea Quigley, 45: Row For Freedom Skipper and Learning and professional development co-ordinator from Boulder, Colorado. • Debbie Beadle, 30: Youth Programme, Co-ordinator, ECPAT UK (End Child Prostitution, Pornography and Trafficking). Lives in London. • Katie Pattison-Hart, 31: Dubai-based model and SME business consultant. Born in Brunei but brought up and educated in Bradford, West Yorkshire. • Kate Richardson, 22: One-to-one classroom assistant and psychology graduate. Lives in Portadown, Northern Ireland. • Helen Leigh, 26: Events team, British Triathlon, from Putney, London.
