Down the hill, round the snaking bends, through the town, over the bridge and turn right at the Lido, next left and we were there.
At about 1:30pm we arrived outside the Hotel San Roque, well to be precise, outside the high walled gardens of the San Roque. It’s a funny place from the outside, it looks nothing, how wrong can first impressions be?

We quickly got our bags and checked into the Hotel, it was stunning, all mahogany wooden walkways, galleries and stairs. Everything smelt of the polish used on the wood. The galleries and stairs creaked as you walked along them as only old wood can, it’s a sound that is rich in texture. The first thing that hit us was how successfully the Hotel had blended the modern areas and materials with the old. This was a quality renovation, no expense had been spared.

The hotel could be described as an art gallery, tasteful original pieces of furniture and art are to be found in corners. Charles Rennie MacIntosh furniture, sculptures and tasteful pieces are everywhere, in every corner and vantage point.

As we were shown to our room, we were stunned and transfixed by the beauty that is Hotel San Roque. We were booked into a junior suite, this consisted of a rather large room, with a central bigger than king sized bed, a sitting area with designer chairs and glass table. In front of the sitting are was an entertainment system that consisted of TV with DVD player and a CD system. Just off to the left of the entertainment system was the Jacuzzi.

I had telephoned on ahead and ordered a bottle of house Cava that was waiting for us, nicely chilled in an ice bucket. Mrs Hopper could not have been happier. We unpacked and opened the Cava and ran the Jacuzzi, sitting there in the bubbles, drinking the bubbly, a phrase came to mind that Michael a bar tender in our honeymoon hotel in Barbados said as he described being awoken on a sunny Barbadian morning by his twin 4 year old daughters as they jumped on him, ‘uh-um man, life don’t get no sweeter than that!’ and that was certainly true about drinking Cava in our suite at the Hotel San Roque surely Tenerife life couldn’t get any sweeter than that?
