Yesterday, I received this email from GB Airways regarding their flights to Tenerife . . .

From 1 September 2006, GB Airways will be joining forces with British Airways’ new ‘streamlined’ service, BA Connect, to offer customers an even better service on flights from Manchester to Malaga, Tenerife South, Paphos, Lanzarote, Malta and Heraklion in Crete.

You’ll still be able to take advantage of all the great benefits of ba.com, including making and managing your booking and printing your own boarding pass, all from the convenience of
your computer.

But BA Connect will also give you even more choice and low, changeable* fares starting from as little as £47 one-way including taxes**, while onboard you’ll be able to purchase from a range of high quality, competitively priced refreshments should you fancy a drink or snack during your flight.

I received a similar email from Monarch last year telling me how they were doing me a favour by charging me for Food & Drinks on their schedule flights to Tenerife - its funny but the cost of flights appear to have either increased or stayed the same and my in-flight costs have gone up yet I'm supposedly getting better value for money in the recent changes! How come?

Today I received this email re baggage allowances on all BA Flights:

Introducing a simpler baggage policy

Dear MR HOPKINS

We're making a few changes to our hand baggage and checked baggage allowances.

The new baggage policy is easy to follow and will reduce airport queues, making your journey quicker and hassle-free. The policy changes include hand, checked and excess baggage allowances and will be phased in over the next five months. I’ve included a quick guide below, and a link to the complete policy if you'd like to read more.

HAND BAGGAGE
From 5 July 2006, all customers will be able to take one standard-sized bag (maximum size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm), plus one briefcase, laptop bag or equivalent into the cabin as hand baggage. You must be able to lift your hand baggage into the overhead locker unaided and the briefcase or laptop computer bag or equivalent must fit under the seat in front of you.

CHECKED BAGGAGE
From 11 October, we will be making changes to the number of bags that you can check in. This will vary according to your class of travel and route. The maximum weight per bag will be reduced to 23kgs to comply with health and safety recommendations.

EXCESS BAGGAGE
Excess baggage charges will also be standardised from 11 October. A fixed fee, dependent on the journey length, will be charged for each bag in excess of the free checked baggage allowance. In the majority of cases the new charges will be less than those currently levied and a further 20% discount will be available by pre-paying on line at ba.com

Now I don't know about anyone else but this will seriously hamper my travel arrangements, as a diver I travel with a large amount of dive kit, this weighs quite a lot and it is not uncommon for me to travel to Tenerife carrrying 28-30Kg in my suitcase. I guess those days are gone. I may have to look at finding a different airline to bring me to Tenerife!
